Do you like the design of the classic 3-door MINI but miss that extra space for your kids in the back seat? And do you find it annoying to always have to slide your front seat forward and sit in the back seat? Then check out the ideal MINI solution with me.
What makes the F55 so good?
It has since become an icon that has continued to be developed every few years since the 1960s. And after producing a few generations, there was a demand from the market for the classic MINI model, but with just a little more space, both in the trunk and also in the back seat, because in the back seat, the 3-door MINI quickly gets cozy. And so in 2014 MINI came to the market with the solution, the MINI 5 door. From the front and back, the MINI 5 door looks the same as the 3 door, but if you look a little further you can see on the side that it has become a little longer than the 3 door version, 16 centimeters.
What do you get in return?
Of course those two extra rear doors. They are not the most large doors, but still it is more convenient to get in the back through these rear doors than in a three-door mini through the front doors. If you're 5 adults in the car it's still very cozy, but for kids it's really fine. Also, it's just nice and convenient to just easily put your bag or coat in the back seat.
The boot is also larger than the 3-door version, at 67 liters. In the trunk there is a double cargo floor. You can take out the top loading floor, put something under it or fold it up completely. Also, you can easily fold down the rear seat in 2 parts and you can fix the rear seat at a 90-degree angle which makes it easier to carry rectangular boxes.
The nice thing about that 5 door MINI is that you have just a little more space in the back seat and trunk, but don't have to sacrifice driving pleasure. Even though its wheelbase is a bit larger, it feels exactly the same in terms of driving as the 3-door version, or in other words, a go-kart for the city.
It's a nice compact car to drive and it also handles nice and direct. If you have never driven a MINI before you always have to get used to the relatively steep windshield. The roof extends quite far forward and for that it feels a bit like looking through the visor from a helmet, really a unique view of the road.
Technical Data MINI Cooper F55
Under the hood of this MINI 5 door is the 136 HP turbocharged 3 cylinder engine, or Cooper version. You also have a one version with 102 HP and a Cooper S with 192 HP, but I must say that especially in the city this is a nice smooth car to drive.
Infotainment from a BMW?
Another thing that is nice about a MINI, whether you buy a 3 or a 5 door, is the design of the interior. In the 1960s, you had a big round speedometer in the middle of the MINI dashboard. In the later MINIs, this gauge remained in the middle. As of 2014, the analog counter is gone and has made way for your navigation system and your radio.
Around that screen is a ring with LED lights that you can adjust. For example, you can have your tachometer illuminated, or when you put the car in sport mode a red LED ring, or when you park for example your parking sensors are illuminated on it, when you are far from an object it turns green, when you are almost against it it turns red. And fortunately you can hear that over the speakers.
Other than that, the infotainment is actually all from BMW, and it just works super well. So you also have the famous drive system that allows you to scroll through the menu and you can even write on the button.
