Do you also love the famous BMW 3 series but want just a little more sporty looks and more driving experience? Then stay tuned and experience this beautiful Coupe
Welcome to a new video of Shift Up in which this time I am going to introduce you to the successor of the well-known BMW 3 series Coupe, or 2-door variant of the 3 series. BMW has not only dropped a new model, but also a new name, namely the 4 series. The 4 Series is available as a Coupe, Cabriolet and Gran Coupe. We have already made a driving test of the latter two, so it was time to take a look at the Coupe variant as well.
If you park the 4 Series next to a 3 Series, a number of things immediately stand out. For example, the nose of the 4 Series looks a lot sharper and therefore more sporty, and the rear lights are also completely different from those of a 3 Series. What is also immediately noticeable is the beautiful long line that runs from front to back, giving the car not only a sporty look but also a very elegant one. Another new element of the 4 Series are the Air Breathers that have been fitted to reduce drag and it also looks nice.
And from the looks of the exterior we turn to the design of the interior. The dashboard will feel familiar to fans of the 3 Series, as it is in fact exactly the same. However, if you turn your head a quarter turn, you will see that the inside of the doors is laid out differently and the doors are also much longer than in a 3 series sedan or touring. The advantage of this is that you have super visibility while driving. Where with the 3 series when looking sideways you quickly look at the B pillar, now you look through the glass and in my opinion that drives very pleasant. The downside of that is often that you can't reach your seat belt, but fortunately those are indicated for you.
Today we are on the road with a 4 series with M-Sport package, recognizable by the modified sporty front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts and inside fine sports seats that in this example are partly covered with beautiful alcantara. That M-Sport package also includes an M-Sport steering wheel that is just a bit thicker and a bit nicer to hold than the standard steering wheel and still looks modern even after 7 years. Also, with an M-Sport package you get an M-Sport suspension as standard which lowers the car 10 mm lower than it would be without it. This ensures that it tilts just a little less when cornering.
What I think is a big plus about the 4 Series Coupe compared to its predecessor, the 3 Series Coupe, is that it feels a lot less stiff. Despite the sport suspension, you can comfortably drive it over a cobblestone road or threshold, but at the same time you retain the tight BMW steering feel. The weight distribution is also very good in this car, almost 50-50. And at the time, this was also the BMW with the lowest center of gravity, and fortunately you notice that immediately while driving.
Under the hood of this 4 Series Coupe is a 184 HP 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine. Good for a sprint from 0 to 100 in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 236 KM/H. And as with many other BMW models, this 4 Series Coupe also features a wonderful drive train with the familiar 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF. An automatic that almost feels like one with a double clutch, because that is how quickly it reacts when you manually up and down shift. And from these specs I'll also show you how practical a coupe like this really is, starting with the trunk that you can easily open remotely with your key.
It is a spacious trunk with a not too low bottom which makes it easy to get stuff in and out. The back seat can be lowered in two parts and the back seat is also more than fine for me with my height. You have plenty of legroom, only I can imagine that if you are taller than 195 cm it gets a little tense. What is nice is that there are not 3 seats, but 2, so those two also sit nice and wide and relaxed with center armrest and even cup holders. And then when you need to get out and the front passenger forgets to help you, you can get out independently by using this button to electrically move the seat forward.
Finally, a word about this particular example. It is a 420i Coupe with thus M-Sport package and optionally ordered 19" polished wheels. It also has a navigation business system, controlled with the still fine iDrive button, has front and rear parking sensors and bluetooth for making calls or streaming music wirelessly via Spotify.
