When you think of a Bmw X5, you quickly think of a big SUV that guzzles quite a bit of fuel and doesn't spare the environment. In this video I am going to introduce you to an X5 that is a little friendlier to the environment and your wallet, the Bmw X5 Hybrid.
Earlier we made a video of this third generation X5 with the BMW X5M. A great SUV with 560 HP and an insane driving experience. On the other hand, of course, it is not so friendly to the environment. If you want a more environmentally friendly variant, you end up with this X5 hybrid. A car with a gasoline engine and with a plug. With this X5 you can drive on the gasoline engine as well as fully electric. In the beginning it takes some getting used to, driving such a big car fully electric!
You can control how the car drives with the eDrive button. When you start the car, it begins to drive in auto edrive mode, which allows the car to decide for itself when to drive on the fuel engine and when to drive on the electric motor. You can drive 31 km fully electric in MAX edrive mode according to the factory, in practice it's about 20 to 25 km, ideal for small trips around town. You can even drive fully electric up to 120 km/h.
You can use the battery control mode to save the energy in the battery for a later time, so it will run on the fuel engine. You can charge the battery at a charging station or at home on 220v. At home it takes about 4 hours, at the charging station about 3 hours. Also, when braking, the car will store energy in the battery, but it will take a long time before the battery is fully charged again.
Under the hood of this car is a turbocharged 4 cylinder gasoline engine. Many people were skeptical about it when it came on the market, but it really drives surprisingly well, especially in combination with the electric motor. In fact, even while making a turn, you feel that you are driving with a smaller engine, because it steers a bit lighter, and that is quite nice in such a large SUV. The gasoline engine delivers 245 HP and together with the electric motor the power output is 313 HP. It has the well-known 8-speed automatic transmission that shifts super smoothly, and the transmission from the fuel to the electric motor is also very smooth.
In the back of the X5 you sit perfectly, with my 1.83m I have enough head and legroom. In the trunk you have a little less space than with a gasoline or diesel variant of the x5, because the load floor is a little higher in this hybrid variant because the battery pack is incorporated underneath.
